On October 22, 2024, the European Patent Office (EPO) published a study on university patent applications in Europe.<\/p>\n

According to the EPO, this study is based on \u201cdata for 1,200 European universities that have generated patent applications at the EPO between 2000-2020.” It considers not only patent applications filed directly by universities, but also those done by other entities mentioning the names of researchers affiliated with these universities.<\/p>\n

The highest performing countries in terms of the number of university patent applications are Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy.<\/p>\n

In France, the Universit\u00e9 de Grenoble Alpes holds the top spot over the reference period (2000-2020) with 3,348 patents, followed by the Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9 with 1,934 patents and Sorbonne Universit\u00e9 with 1,808 patents.<\/p>\n
