PATENTS – PATENT INDEX 2023 OF THE EUROPEAN PATENT OFFICE – FRANCE
In 2023, the number of patent applications in Europe (199,275 applications) rose significantly in comparison with 2022 (193,460 applications), representing an increase of 2.9%.
Once again over this year, the most innovative sectors appeared to be digital communication, followed by medical technologies and information technology.
For the year 2023, France however was looking at a slight decrease in the number of patent applications filed with the European Patent Office (EPO) – more precisely, with 10,814 applications, which represents a decline of 1.5% as compared to the year 2022. As a result, the country has dropped to sixth place (from fifth place in 2022) in the rankings of the “ 50 top countries of origin of patent applications in 2023 ‘”.
The United States continues to occupy first place in the said rankings with 48,155 applications (+ 0.4%), followed, as in 2022, by Germany with 24,966 applications (+ 1.4%), and Japan with 21,520 applications (-0.3%).
Finally, the new unitary patent system, in force since 1 June 2023, is proving to be a great success with proprietors of European patents.
