TOWARDS EUROPEAN PROTECTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS FOR CRAFT AND INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

The reinforcement, at European level, of the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products has been awaited for several years, in the wake of that already granted to agricultural products and foodstuffs, wines and spirits.

On September 12, 2023, the European Parliament approved the proposal for a regulation on the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products. The text must now be adopted by the Council of the European Union, then published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

For the record, France has already been protecting geographical indications for craft and industrial products since Law n°2014-344 of March 17, 2014 (Hamon Law) codified in Articles L721-2 et seq. of the Intellectual Property Code.

Thus and by way of example, the geographical indications “Tapisseries d’Aubusson”, “Pierre de Bourgogne”, “Porcelaine de Limoges” and “Linge Basque” have been approved – (Source: https://base-indications-geographiques.inpi.fr/fr/ig-homologuees).
