UNIVERSITY PATENTS IN EUROPE – FRANCE EXCELS
On October 22, 2024, the European Patent Office (EPO) published a study on university patent applications in Europe.
According to the EPO, this study is based on “data for 1,200 European universities that have generated patent applications at the EPO between 2000-2020.” It considers not only patent applications filed directly by universities, but also those done by other entities mentioning the names of researchers affiliated with these universities.
The highest performing countries in terms of the number of university patent applications are Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy.
In France, the Université de Grenoble Alpes holds the top spot over the reference period (2000-2020) with 3,348 patents, followed by the Université Paris Cité with 1,934 patents and Sorbonne Université with 1,808 patents.
